Linksys have released a wireless connection for IP Phones. The WBP54G WiFi dongle is specially designed to convert Linksys Phones and ATA’s into a wireless device, so it can connect to your home network without an Ethernet cable. This lets you put your phone where it’s most convenient for you, without running network cables and not be constrained to the area around your Internet connection.

The included Setup Wizard makes it easy to configure the Bridge to your wireless network’s settings. To protect your privacy, all wireless voice transmissions can be encrypted with WEP or industrial-strength Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA2) security.

Callagenix have tested this device with both Linksys devices and a variety of other manufacturers IP phones e.g. SNOM 320.

I still have no idea why people/businesses are still using fax machines, I have to say I have even less idea as to why fax machines are still used in offices when everything a fax can do can be …

I still have no idea why people/businesses are still using fax machines, I have to say I have even less idea as to why fax machines are still used in offices when everything a fax can do can be achieved via a computer.

Many UK businesses and homes now contain more powerful electrical equipment then NASA had at its disposal for the original Apollo missions, yet Neanderthal man still insists on ripping up trees to make fax paper which for many is only used for SPAM purposes.

All I ever see on other fax machines in work places is junk fax mailers, it’s the equivalent of junk mail being delivered through your letterbox, you don’t want it, yet without fail it turns up on a regular basis, and you know full well that a tree has been felled in creating the junk mail, look at the waste junk faxes cause:

Toner use

Equipment supply

Paper waste

Wasted time

Energy in manufacture

All of these have a knock-on effect, with the exception of wasted time all of the others draw power in manufacture, fuel is required in logistics/shipping, even the packaging of a fax machine, toner or paper requires manufacturing, in fact the supply chain is almost never-ending.

So what can be done to reduce fax waste? Easy, Fax to email!

How can you stop junk faxes?

If you are insistent that you CANNOT live without your fax machine, then use law to help cut fax and planet consumption. Under Government regulation it is illegal for companies to fax any individual business who has indicated they don’t want to receive junk faxes.

Stop junk faxes today

Use the fax preference service register, it will take about 28 days after registering for all jujk faxes to be stopped, simply go to www.fpsonline.org.uk and stop those faxes today!

Reducing fax waste - permanently!

I can remember diverting my faxes ten years ago with with 56k modem, so why with technology so advanced do so many businesse still use physical fax machines?

Well the technology is here and for a small price you can help reduce your business carbon footprint and vet your faxes via email prior to any possible printing requirement, which can only be a good thing.

If you are a heavy fax machine user try our fax to email service and see if you can reduce your reliance on office printing.

Phone services have taken on a completely new meaning as a new solution to poor mobile phone network coverage is being trialled in the US. Space balloon transmitters have been launched into the atmosphere to provide network coverage to rural areas – something which has received attention from the likes of Google, who have begun to show interest in wireless services.

Transmitters which provide the same coverage as 40 mobile phone towers are attached to hydrogen balloons and released 20 miles into the stratosphere, with each balloon having a life cycle of approximately a day.

The system relies on the cooperation of local residents such as farmers to release the balloons at certain times and places. Once the transmitters become separated from the balloons, the transmitters fall to the ground by parachute, and are then collected by volunteers using GPS systems and returned for a $100 reward.

We’ve all called technical support lines and been put in a queue, listening to a jaunty tune while waiting to be put through to an actual person. It’s annoying enough to have to wait to be put through, but even more frustrating if you’re paying for the pleasure of it.

A new move by British Telecom is set to change things, however, and customers calling BT’s technical support lines will soon be in for a pleasant surprise. BT are set to transfer all their technical support lines from 0845 and 0870 numbers to freephone 0800 numbers and 0808 numbers (free as of April 2008).

This is great news for customers, who until now have been paying 0.05p per minute for the 0845 numbers and 1.5p per minute for the 0870 numbers. This move could well pave the way for other suppliers to follow suit and remain competitive with BT.

In fact, many small and mid-sized companies are already seeing the benefits of switching to 0800 and 0808 free phone numbers as they dramatically increase the number of enquiries received and provide a major boost to business.

Callagenix can provide both 0800 and 0808 phone services, to discuss free phone numbers with Callagenix, visit http://www.callagenix.com/pages/numbers/0800_numbers.html.

The development of phone services in the UK is constantly changing, and technology looks set to take another step forward with the introduction of femtocells. Described by the Beeb as “A phone mast in your front room”, a femtocell is a small, low powered mobile phone base station that looks set to impact the way we use mobile and broadband technology in the home and small business environment.

The femtocell device connects to your mobile phone service provider via a Cable or DSL broadband connection and allows an extension of the service coverage. Calls on your mobile are then sent via your internet connection instead of through the network provider’s masts and base stations. Network providers are encouraging the idea as it represents an opportunity for them to compete against VoIP / IP Telephony services.

Trials are currently underway by companies Vodafone and Softel, and it is expected that base stations may be bundled with mobile phone contracts in as little as two years.

The End to mobile home signal problems

Femtocell base stations could solve many problems facing mobile phone users in remote areas where network coverage may be poor. The base station, using your internet connection, would boost the signal strength to your phone, meaning no more walks to the bottom of the garden and holding your handset up to the heavens in an attempt to obtain a signal.

High-Speed 3G Technology

With built in 3G technology, the femtocell base stations offer download speeds of up to 7mbps, matching and even beating some home broadband offerings.

Health Concerns

There are concerns that the femtocells may face stiff opposition in the same way that many oppose the erecting of permanent mobile phone base stations in local communities.

There have been long time concerns over the radiation that is emitted from mobile devices themselves, and particularly base stations, and it is highly likely that similar concerns will be raised with the arrival of femtocells.

Research has actually shown that femtocells emit very low levels of radio waves whilst they are being used and general consensus from scientists indicate that there are no health effects as a result of exposure to radio waves from femtocells as published in a report by Nokia Sienmens Networks.
